About two kilometers from Calatafimi, on the northern slope of the Tre Croci hill, “on the esplanade halfway up the mountain, opposite the ruins of ancient Segesta” stands the Sanctuary of Maria SS.ma di Giubino, one of the most famous Marian sanctuaries in Sicily, whose fame is linked to the memory of Blessed Arcangelo Placenza da Calatafimi (1380 – 1460), who lived there for some time, and, above all, to the cult of Maria SS.ma di Giubino, patron saint of Calatafimi. The origins of this sanctuary are very ancient, and some modern scholars believe it can be identified with that of an ancient fortress called “Calatagabuni”, of which there is evidence from the second half of the 14th century; while “the first documents of the existence of the church are found in the year 1495”. Tradition has it that the marble triptych with the Madonna later called of Giubino was originally located in a church in the district of “Angimbè”; Since this church was in danger of collapsing, it was moved to the nearby church of Giubino and entrusted to the care and worship of the hermits, who lived there until the late 16th century. It remained there until April 1655, when Our Lady of Giubino was elected patron saint of Calatafimi, whose territory was infested with locusts. The marble icon of the Virgin was then removed from the triptych that was walled into the altar of this church, to be carried in procession. Since then, this sacred icon has been housed in the city’s Mother Church and then in that of the Holy Crucifix, until 1907, when the former church of the monastery of St. Catherine became its city sanctuary. It was in this sanctuary that the triptych was finally reassembled and restored in 1931. Every year in early July, the statue of Our Lady of Giubino is carried in procession and returned to the city sanctuary; the following Sunday the feast of Maria SS.ma di Giubino is celebrated.
