Exiting through the side door of the sanctuary of Maria SS. Di Giubino, you find yourself in Piazza del Plebiscito, so named in memory of the “general popular rally held within the church of the historic convent of San Michele” in 1861, in which the people of Calatafimi “affirmed their desire for a united Italy, with Victor Emmanuel as constitutional King.” On the façade of the church of San Michele, two plaques commemorate the insurrection of May 12, 1860, and Garibaldi’s victory. On the south side of the square, the Villa Comunale opened in 1909, housing two bronze monuments, both modeled by the sculptor Antonio Ugo (Palermo, 1870-1950): a bust of Garibaldi, inaugurated in 1910, and the Monument to the Fallen in the Great War 1915-1918, erected in 1925. Every year, a laurel wreath is laid in memory of the fallen of the Expedition of 1000. Today, inside the Villa Comunale, there is a small children’s playground, benches, trees, and even a small kiosk at the back, which organizes musical evenings in the summer.
