St. Julian Martyr Church

The Church of San Giuliano Martire overlooks Piazza Francesco Cangemi. It is a very ancient church. It was established as a parish in 1619, following the dismemberment of the district of the Mother Church. It was home to the Congregation of the Holy Souls in Purgatory, founded in 1572, and the Company of Maria SS.ma del Rosario, founded in 1667. It was expanded in 1676. Rebuilt in the early 19th century, it suffered severe damage in the 1968 earthquake. Restored, it was reopened for worship in 1979. The exterior features a façade with stained glass windows featuring sacred motifs and a door framed by pilasters with Corinthian capitals surmounted by a triangular pediment. Inside, the single nave with an apse, presbytery, and choir is covered by a barrel vault. Six pillars jut out from the sides of the hall, demarcating the four side chapels. On the right side of the nave: Saint Eligius, wooden statue, Saint Julian, oil on canvas, probably 18th century. In the apse: on the high altar, Mary Delivering the Rosary Crown to Saint Dominic, wooden statues; on the left wall, Angel Showing Himself to the Father of Saint Rosalia, oil on canvas, probably 18th century. Continuing, on the left side of the nave: Saint Cajetan of Thiene with Child, oil on canvas, 18th century; Saint Anne, wooden statue; marble baptismal font dated 1642. In a niche: Saint Anne (wooden statue). On an altar: Saint Cajetan (18th century canvas). On the high altar: Madonna of the Rosary with Saint Dominic (wooden statues). Right side: Shell-shaped font for holy water, in red marble, dated 1695.
