St. Michael the Archangel Church

The cult of Saint Michael was once very lively in Calatafimi and his feast day, which fell on May 8, was accompanied by “fifteen days of free tax”, that is, for fifteen days no tax was paid on goods. This church, which originally belonged to the confraternity of Saint Michael the Archangel, housed for some time the remains of the blessed Arcangelo Placenza from Calatafimi, which were later transferred to the Church of Santa Maria di Gesù in Alcamo. In 1596 the confraternity granted the church to the Friars of the Third Order of Saint Francis who enlarged it and built their convent next to it. Having suffered considerable damage during the Belice earthquake of 1968, the current wooden trussed roof is the result of a later reconstruction.[8] The interior of the church is divided into three naves, in neoclassical and baroque style, each with a portal. The church contains a 16th-century holy water stoup, a statue of St. Michael the Archangel from 1490, and several stuccoes and paintings.
