Going up Via Antonio Rosmini, which initially runs alongside the buildings of the Church of the Holy Trinity and the Permanent Orphanage on the right, you come across the rustic, unadorned façade of the former Church of Santo Rocco, which gave its name to the entire neighborhood. This church, documented since 1567, was rebuilt in the late 18th century by the priest Giuseppe Orlando. Inside is a single nave with three altars. It was erected “on the very site of the cemetery for those who died from the terrible plague of 1575 and 1576, which claimed so many lives in Calatafimi.” In 1688, Saint Rocco was elected Protector of Calatafimi against the crickets, or locusts. The only existing bell, cast at the expense of the priest G. Orlando in 1907, still stands on the bell tower of San Giuliano. It was abandoned after 1866 and reopened for worship in 1906 and closed again after the 1968 earthquake.
