Traveling along state road 113 from Trapani to Calatafimi, you reach a crossroads leading to the hill known as “Pianto Romano,” where the eponymous “Ossuary” stands. It was erected in 1892 to a design by Ernesto Basile on the 32nd anniversary of the battle of May 15, 1860, against the Bourbons. The building has a square base with shaped marble walls, crowned by a frieze and a Doric cornice. A tall ashlar obelisk rises up from the steps, in the middle of which a bronze crown with the Trinacria and two palm trees can be seen. On the sides, two bronze reliefs by Battista Tassara depict the Thousand during the landing at Marsala and the Battle of Calatafimi. Inside, set into the wall on both the right and left are two large glass cases containing the relics of fallen Bourbon and Garibaldian soldiers, while a register records an unbroken list of visitors who have paid homage to the remains of the latter over the years. Behind the monument is a cypress-lined path, known as the Avenue of Remembrance, which leads to a stele engraved with the phrase Garibaldi uttered during the battle against the valiant soldier Nino Bixio: “Here, Italy is made, or we die.” This is a work by architect B. Vivona, created to mark the first centenary of the Battle of Calatafimi. Every year on May 15th, the historic battle is commemorated by the municipal administration of Calatafimi-Segesta, with the participation of local authorities and others from other Italian municipalities, along with the participation of the schools of Calatafimi-Segesta and the communities of the city itself. A wreath is placed there to remember all those who fell in battle and the Liturgy of the Word is celebrated with the blessing of the Ossuary, performed by a priest or on certain occasions also by the Bishop.
